Update March 2024: Please read as we have changed the way we carry out decoder fittings.

This service is for us to either fit a decoder (sound or normal) to a locomotive you send to us, or you buy from us.

To book the fitting service simply pop this into your basket (along with the loco you are buying from us if applicable) and checkout as normal. Our system will immediately send you a booking form to complete. Fill this out and return it to us (with your loco if applicable) and we will carry out the work and send you an invoice once the work is done.

On the booking form you can specify the make of decoder you prefer, whether you require a stay alive and the loco number you want it setting to (long addresses set at no extra cost!)

Our current charges (as of March 2024) are:

DCC fitting £39.95

DCC sound fitting £175.00 (please contact us first to check availability of sound files)

Stay alive fitting at the same time: Additional £25

These prices include decoder, fitting and programming if required. It doesn't matter what sort of decoder your loco requires (6, 8, 21 or even hard-wired) we will find out and fit the appropriate one. It doesn't matter if your loco is DCC ready or not.

If you loco fails DC test there may be additional charges. We will discuss these with you beforehand. For conversion to DCC your loco must first be a good runner on DC, If it isn't you'll only have more problems when converted to DCC.

If we are unable to convert your loco to DCC it will be returned for our standard postage cost.

Note for many DMU/EMU types with working lights at both ends, it will be necessary to fit two decoders to allow the lights to work correctly.

Please note we only carry out decoder fitting to 00 gauge UK locomotives and cannot fit decoders into Bachmann split-chassis type locomotives.

UK delivery

We endeavour to dispatch all orders received before 11am the same day (excluding weekends) However there are occasionally circumstances beyond our control that will affect this.

We always obtain a proof of posting and this will be emailed to you with your order acknowledgement.

Standard Economy Delivery

  • Orders up to £24.99 cost just £3.95 for our standard economy delivery (3-5 days).
  • Orders between £25 and £99.99 are £4.95 (3-5 days).
  • All orders over £100 are sent post free (3-5 days).

24 Hour Tracked Delivery

You can get your item sooner by choosing our 24 hour tracked delivery option for an additional £3.95 on top of the costs above.

Courier Delivery

Some items can only be sent by courier either due to their size or contents. This will be explained in the product description. The delivery costs are the same however the delivery may take a little longer (up to 10 days) All courier deliveries are tracked and you will be sent a tracking number.

International shipping

Not all items we sell can be sent overseas usually because of their contents. This will be noted in the product description. If you order these items for delivery overseas we will not be able to ship your order and your payment refunded.

You may return any item for a refund or exchange with 30 days of ordering. After this time we are unable to offer you a refund or exchange.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging and with all the included parts and extras.

To complete your return, we require a receipt or proof of purchase. Please include your order number with the item.
Please do not send your purchase back to the manufacturer. 

There are certain situations where we are unable to accept an item for refund or exchange:
- Book with obvious signs of use 
- CD, DVD, VHS tape, software, video game, cassette tape, or vinyl record that has been opened 
- Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error.
- Any item returned to us after 30 days since ordering.


You must contact us in the first instance to arrange your refund or exchange. Please email sales@hobbytrax.co.uk with details of your order number. We will then provide details for the items return.

Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund. 
If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your original method of payment, within 5 working days. We are unable to make a refund payment to a different card to the one you paid with.

Late or missing refunds
If you haven’t received a refund yet, first check your bank account again. 
Then contact your credit card company, it may take some time before your refund is officially posted. 
Next contact your bank. There is often some processing time before a refund is posted.

Sale items
Only regular priced items may be refunded, unfortunately sale items cannot be refunded. 

We only replace items if they are defective or damaged. If you need to exchange it for the same item, send us an email to sales@hobbytrax.co.uk with details of your order to arrange your exchange.

You will be responsible for paying for your own shipping costs for returning your item. Shipping costs are non-refundable. If you receive a refund, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund.
